Concern for Face Stability & Potential Disasters

Email Template:

Dear Minister Ralston,

I am writing to ask your support for a moratorium on logging on the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face pending a thorough and complete karst assessment of this proposed logging area.

The terms of reference of this assessment must be developed by reputable, qualified professionals whose specialty is karst evaluation. This evaluation must be independent of the logging company prior to any forest development. Karst is a valuable and vulnerable feature on the AJL Face with recreational and ecological significance. These geological and hydrological features are continuous from Argenta to Johnsons Landing. Karst increases the risk of terrain instability.  Karst disturbance also presents a risk to spring and creek water sources for local communities' domestic watersheds.

Adding the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face to the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park will protect this mountainside and its domestic watersheds from environmental detriment that can arise when unstable slopes are logged for timber.  I believe that this should be taken into utmost consideration by our political representatives, especially considering that the geological and hydrological nature of this mountainside is continuous from Argenta to its neighbouring community of Johnsons Landing where a horrific and fatal landslide occurred in 2012.  It should be noted that the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face sits directly over the sole road access to the remote community of Johnsons Landing.  Jeopardizing this already impacted community with human-induced slope instability is completely unacceptable.  Local residents should not have to live with the stress brought by the industrial development of these delicate slopes, potentially putting their communities at risk.  This area must be permanently protected within the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park for the well-being of its adjacent residents.

The disastrous Johnsons Landing Slide in 2012 has raised significant community concern about the inadvisability of road building and logging in the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face. We need to protect water supplies  and prevent any further landslides with the potential loss of life and property in our communities.

Please confirm your attention to this urgent matter.

Thank you for your attention,
