Demand Old Growth Deferrals & Full Protection
Email Template:
Dear Minister Ralston,
Your intervention is needed immediately to defer old growth logging on the Argenta-Johnsons Landing (AJL) Face. A large scale version of the map, “Potential Priority Stands for Old Growth Protection and Recruitment in Southeastern BC: West Kootenay Subregion,” West_Kootenay-OG-sml_9-21-21.pdf (netdna-ssl.com) shows clearly that 3 of the 5 approved cutblocks for CP405 in Cooper Creek Cedar's (CCC) license, contain potential Priority One old growth forest. Furthermore, block 7, the block with the most Priority One old growth, is also recently occupied habitat for the highly endangered Mountain Caribou. Certainly this combination of priority old growth and endangered species habitat is deserving of protection. While government biologists are desperately putting Mountain Caribou in pens, the same government is still allowing the clearcutting of Mountain Caribou habitat. This is unacceptable. CCC plans to start logging this May or June. Please stop these clearcuts!
The positive alternative to logging off these forests is the full protection of the AJL Face within the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park. This longstanding proposal adds 6200 hectares to this park considered by BC Parks to be the only intact ecosystem left in SE BC. This opportunity to expand such a special place cannot be overlooked. Already surrounded on 3 sides by this extraordinary park, the AJL Face addition will protect the ecosystem from mountaintop to lake shore. The Proposal — Mt. Willet Wilderness Forever
But first the logging needs to stop before it unduly compromises the integrity of this ecosystem. Deferrals are needed right now for the old growth on the approved cutblocks on the AJL Face. Please let me know how you plan to proceed with this issue.
Sincerely yours,
